Kenya launches livestock insurance
1 min readThe Kenya Government has launched a livestock insurance program aimed at cushioning pastoralist communities against losses occasioned by drought and animal diseases in 14 arid and semi-arid areas of the country.
Launching the Kenya Livestock Insurance Program (KLIP) in Wajir County on August 24, 2016, Agriculture, Livestock & Fisheries Cabinet Secretary Mr. Willy Bett noted that pastoralist communities in arid areas depended on livestock products for their livelihood and lost billions of shillings during drought, which the program will address.
The program will be jointly implemented by the National Government and the County Governments of the beneficiary counties of Wajir, Turkana, Marsabit, Mandera, Isiolo, Tana River, Samburu, Garissa, West Pokot, Baringo, Kajiado, Laikipia, Narok and Lamu. During the launch, a payout of sh. 3,526,600 was made to 275 pastoralists to mitigate their animals against drought effects. Each of them took home Sh. 12,824.
